The state of Maine was the host of one of the most memorable moments in sports history 52 years ago today.

On May 25, 1965 Lewiston held the state’s first and only world heavyweight boxing championship match at the venue now known as the Colisee.  The match-up was the second fight between Sonny Liston and the newly named Muhammed Ali, which was moved from Boston to Maine at the last second due to controversy surrounding the first bout and the fighters.

mob connections to the Liston camp resulted in the boxer going down in the first round.  The result of the win gave Ali the WBC Heavyweight title and provided sports fans with one of the most iconic photos from the boxing realm, shot by photographer Neil Leifer.
