Veteran Boston Bruins forward David Backes has been suspended for three games for a late and high hit on Frans Nielson in Tuesday night's win over Detroit.

Backes was called for a two-minute roughing penalty at the time but the league reviewed the play and called it a shoulder to head hit and slapped him with a suspension and no pay. It will cost Backes almost $97,000 in salary.

The Bruins are already without Patrice Bergeron and Charlie McAvoy and Tuukka Rask because of injuries. Now Backes will sit.

The B's play Philadelphia Thursday night and then play the Chicago Blackhawks in a home-and-home weekend series Saturday and Sunday.

Backes has 11 goals and 16 assists in 47 games for the Bruins this year.
