The City of Bangor has announced its candidate for the position of Fire Chief. The recommendation must now be approved by the City Council before it's final.

City Manager Catherine Conlow announced Monday the appointment of Thomas E. Higgins, of Bangor as Fire Chief, pending the confirmation by the City Council at its regular meeting on January 26th. Higgins was selected from a field of twenty-six candidates, including internal, in-state, and out of state applicants. As Fire Chief, Higgins will also serve as the City's Emergency Management Director.

Higgins is currently the Assistant Fire Chief in Bangor and Conlow says he's held a number of increasingly responsible positions during his 24+ years of service, including Firefighter, Lieutenant, and Captain. Before coming to work in Bangor, Higgins served as Chief of the Hermon Fire Department for six years. In addition to his fire service, he's been active in local organizations including the American Red Cross and the Make-a-Wish Foundation.

"I am pleased and honored to have been selected to become Bangor's next Fire Chief," Higgins said in a press release. "My career has been focused on a leadership position in the fire service and I look forward to ensuring that Bangor residents are provided with outstanding fire and emergency medical services."

Higgins lives in Bangor with his wife Tammy and their two children. If confirmed, he will begin his new position on January 27th. He will replace former Chief Scott Lucas, who tendered his resignation in September, effective in December. He was put on leave a couple of weeks later.
