The UMaine football team used a stingy defense to win its season opener 10-6 over visiting Norfolk State at Alfand Stadium.The Black Hole defense held the Spartans to just 100 total yards of offense on the night. Christophe Mulumba Tshimanga led the team with 14 tackles while Austin Brown chipped in with 8.

Dan Collins who won the starting quarterback job on Thursday completed 8 of 22 passes for 92 yards and a touchdown. The scoring strike was a 33 yard completion to Damarr Aultman in the 2nd quarter.

The Bears now have a week off before playing at Bryant on September 13.
