Black Bears Begin With Win

The UMaine hockey team tuned up for this week's season opener with a 3-1 win over Acacdia University from Canada on Sunday afternoon

The Black Bears got a powerplay goal, a shorthanded goal and a third period put-away goal.

The powerplay goal was scored by freshman Alexis Binner. The shortie came from junior Rob MIchel. And, with the game 2-1 in the third period, the final goal from Tim Doherty.

Maine had 40 shots on goal while the Axemen had 18.

Rob McGovern and Jeremy Swayman shared goaltender duties.

The Black Bears open Hockey East Conference play this weekend with a Friday-Saturday series hosting UConn.
