Crews on Wednesday afternoon rescued a man who jumped from the Veterans Remembrance Bridge into the Penobscot River, according to Bangor police.

The man, who is not being identified, was in the icy water for about 30 minutes, clinging to a pillar under the bridge, according to Sgt. Tim Cotton of the Bangor Police Department.

Bangor Fire Department crews, using a rescue boat, were able to reach the man, whom Cotton described as "alive" and "cold," and pull him form the water.

The man was taken to the hospital.
