An emotional John Farrell announced today that he will be out for the rest of the season as he undergoes chemotherapy for cancer that was recently diagnosed.During the off day on Monday Farrell stayed in Detroit for hernia surgery. During that procedure doctors discovered a cancerous mass and told he has stage 1 lymphoma. Chemotherapy treatments will start on Tuesday at Mass General Hospital and take nine weeks. Farrell said the treatment is his only option and said it is highly curable.

In the meantime bench coach Torey Lovullo will manage the team for the remaining 49 games.
