Joan Benoit Samuelson – 30 Years Ago Today, August 5, 1984

30 years ago today, August 5, 1984, Freeport Maine's Joan Benoit Samuelson, won the first ever Women's Olympic Marathon in Los Angeles. She was 27 years old, and amazingly enough the US Olympic Trials just 17 days after having had arthroscopic knee surgery!

Benoit Samuelson ran in the Boston Marathon this past year at the age of 57 in a time of 2 hours and 52 minutes!
