UM Hockey Picked 12th In Hockey East Poll

The University of Maine men's ice hockey team was selected 12th in the Hockey East Coaches Poll today at Media Day.  Boston University was the top team in the conference with 10 first place votes.

The Black Bears finished with 30 votes overall in the poll and will try to improve on their 8-24-6 overall mark from a year ago in which the team finished conference play in 11th place.  After BU in the poll, Northeastern, Notre Dame, UMass Lowell, and Providence wrapped up the top five.

Ortiz Graces Cover of Sports Illustrated

David Ortiz will be on the cover of the latest edition of the Sports Illustrated magazine in his final week of his regular season playing career.

Ortiz will be on the cover for the fourth time of his career as he wraps up his final regular season of a 20-year MLB tenure.  As part of the issue, SI let Ortiz become a 'guest editor' and will also feature a sit-down interview with Big Papi himself.  Time, Inc. recently released a commemorative issue detailing Ortiz's career last month

UMaine Football Drops Home Opener To JMU

The University of Maine Black Bears fell to the James Madison Dukes by a score of 31-20 on Saturday afternoon for the opener at Alfond Stadium.

JMU running back Khalid Abdullah rushed for 172 yards including two scores to help lead the Dukes to the win.  Maine quarterback Dan Collins passed for 238 yards and had three interceptions in the contest.

The scoring started with a JMU touchdown as the Dukes went down the field and capped the drive with a three yard run from Abdullah to make the score 7-0.  The Black Bears would later respond with a six play 80 yard drive with a score from Earnes Edwards to make the contest a one point lead in favor of JMU after a failed two-point conversion.
