Chung Wins GBO On 4th Playoff Hole
Former Stanford University golfer David Chung won the Greater Bangor Open Golf Tournament in one of the most exciting finishes in the 48 year history of the event.
Chung chased fellow pro Mike Van Sickle all day and finally caught him with a birdie on the 17th hole at Bangor Muni. Both golfers stood 16-under par for the tourney. Both of them parred #18 and so then finished the 3-day event tied with a score of 191.
Sudden death playoff action was next.
Chung and Van Sickle (who set the course record with a 60 in round one) battled for the first three playoff holes, still tied.
On the 4th playoff hole, Van Sickle hit is drive into the woods on the left (course hole #7) and it was over. Chung needed only a par to win in sudden death. He collected $9,000 for the win. Van Sickle gets $5,000 for second place.
NOTES: Bangor native Jesse Speirs fired a final round 66 to finish in 4th place. Maine golfer Shawn Warren fired a final round 61 to finish 5th.
