With high school basketball teams holding tryouts and first week practices, the Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference(KVAC) preseason coaches poll names the Hampden Bronco boys as the team to beat in Eastern Maine Class A.

Russ Bartlett's Broncos are defending state champions after completing an undefeated season a year ago. Key returning players include Zac and Nick Gilpin, Cam Scott, as well as new player Isiah Bess who played for the Class C champion Penquis Valley HS team last year.

The Bangor Rams are picked as the #2 team in the KVAC. 2nd year coach Ed Katahla will get Xavier Lewis back for his senior season. Lewis played at Lawrence HS last year but returned to Bangor this fall.

The KVAC coaches poll was first reported by the Kennebec Journal. Here's the top-8 team breakdown...

1. Hampden

2. Bangor

3. Messalonskee

4. Edward Little

5. Brunswick

6. Oxford Hills

7. Lewiston

8. Brewer
