Cocaine and Heroin Seized in Drug Bust Following Traffic Stop

Thorpe, Sutherland, Douglas

Three people are facing charges after a traffic stop that lead to the seizure of $25,000 in cocaine and heroin. Police also recovered a stolen handgun.

Public Safety spokesman Steve McCausland says the investigation began late Wednesday when Bangor Police Officer Nick Huggins conducted a routine traffic stop on the southbound ramp of I-95, near the Hogan Road. The driver, 34-year-old Timothy Thorpe of Dedham, was found to be in possession of a small amount of cocaine. Also in the car was Terrence Douglas, age 34 of Bennetsville, South Carolina.

The officer called for a State Police canine to help search the vehicle. Trooper Barry Meserve arrived with his dog Zorro. While the vehicle was being searched, Douglas ran off but was quickly caught and found to be in possession of around $1,700 and a small amount of marijuana.

Thorpe was arrested and charged with possession of cocaine and violation of conditions of release. Douglas was charged with refusing to submit to arrest. Both were taken to Penobscot County Jail.

As the investigation continued, police learned that Douglas was staying in an Odlin Road hotel in Bangor. A search of that room (after he had been released on bail) netted 40 grams of heroin, 41 grams of crack cocaine, and other evidence of drug trafficking.

Police then looked into Douglas’s identified accomplice, 28-year-old Tiffany Sutherland of Bangor. During a search of a residence on Pine View Drive in Winterport, police seized another 22 grams of heroin, 66 grams of powder cocaine, 12 grams of crack cocaine, and approximately $3,000. In addition, a loaded 44 magnum handgun was recovered. It had just recently been stolen.

Douglas and Sutherland have been charged with Class A Trafficking in Schedule W Drugs (Heroin and Cocaine). Both have previous drug convictions and are currently being held at Penobscot County Jail. Police say the investigation is continuing and more charges and arrests are expected.
