Bangor pro golfer Jesse Speirs is on the course in North Carolina at the PGA Tour event. With a 147th ranking on the tour, Speirs knows he needs to improve his standing.

And, he needs to do it at this tournament in North Carolina and next weekend's event in South Carolina.

Speirs is one of about 30 players who are exempt through the first two re-rankings on the Tour. That re-ranking comes after the next two events.

He will need to jump from 147th into the top 125 to feel safe and keep his tour playing card.

After missing the cut for the first five tourneys, Speirs has played all four rounds in the past to events.

Speirs carded a 2-under par 69 in the first round Thursday. That puts him in a tie for 23rd place. The leader, J.J. Spaun is 8-under par.
