Red Sox pitcher Ryan Dempster announced Sunday he will not play this year. At a press conference down in Fort Myers, Florida Dempster said he is not ready physically or mentally to play. He has a disc issue with his neck and a bone spur issue.

Dempster said he started having conversations with club officials a couple of weeks ago about not playing. He will pass up the final year of his contract that would have payed him $13 million dollars.

He did not say he was retiring just yet.
