The Ellsworth Boys beat John Bapst Saturday, December 15 at the Bangor Auditorium by the score of 61-53 to improve to 2-1 on the season, while John Bapst fell to 0-3.

The game was called very tightly by the referees, and it became a battle of free throws. In the pregame Coach Peter Austin talked about the desire of being able to control the rotation of the Eagles, and not have it dictated by the players or refs with foul trouble. Unfortunately, it wasn't to be, as with 4:30 left to play in the 1st Quarter Ellsworth's Jeff Weeks was forced to the bench with 3 early fouls, and John Bapst led 6-4 after Bapst's Colby Kohn hit two free throws.

With 2:40 left in the 1st Quarter, Ellsworth's Brandon Braley hit two free throws and Ellsworth led 10-9. Ellsworth's Josh Bean sank two free throws with 15.4 seconds left to go in the 1st Quarter and the game was tied 15-15, and that was how the quarter ended. Ellsworth was 5-6 from the free throw line, and John Bapst was 4-6.

In the 2nd Quarter Ellsworth's Bruce St. Peter collected a rebound with 5:28 left and put the shot back in, but missed his free throw and Ellsworth led 19-17. With 1:09 left Cody Lyons hit his third 3 pointer and John Bapst led 29-26. Bapst's Sam Brown sank a shot, was fouled and hit his free thow and Bapst led 32-26 at the half. John Bapst was 7-14 from the free throw line in the 2nd Quarter while Ellsworth was 3-9 from the charity stripe.

1:48 left and the score was tied 38-38. With 1:37 left Braley went 1-2 from the free throw line and Ellsworth led 39-38 and with 1:15 left in the 3rd Griffin Nightingale scored his 10th point of the quarter, and Ellsworth led 41-38. Ellsworth was on a 17-6 run, and at the end of the 3rd Quarter Ellsworth led 44-39. Ellsworth was 7-11 from the free throw line in the 3rd Quarter, while John Bapst was 2-6.

With 3:30 left in the 4th Quarter Bapst's Austin Cyr fouled out with 4 points and Ellsworth led 57-47 after they sank both free throws. In the 4th Quarter Ellsworth was 7-9 from the free throw line and finished the game 22-35. John Bapst was 3-6 and finished 16-32 for the game.

Ellsworth's next game is Tuesday night, December 18 at home when they take on Hermon. That game may be heard on WBZN Internet Radio with the pregame starting at 6:40 and the tip-off at 7 PM. John Bapst's next game is Thursday December 20 when they travel to Presque Isle to play the Wildcats.
