Old Town’s Libby Too Much for Eagles
The Ellsworth Eagles traveled to Old Town, Thursday January 3rd, and came away with the loss, falling to the Old Town Coyotes by a score of 53-47.
The 1st Quarter was high scoring. Old Town’s Zach Bartlett scored the first basket with 7:40 remaining and Old Town led 2-0. With 7:15 left, Garrett Libby hit a 3 pointer and Old Town led 5-0. With 6:50 left Ellsworth’s Brandon Braley put Ellsworth on the scoreboard with a basket and the score was 5-2. With 6:43 left Bartlett hit a field goal and was fouled and sank the free throw and Old Town was up 8-2. With 5:59 left, Old Town’s Eddie Gonnella got the rebound and put the shot in and Old Town led 10-2, causing Ellsworth to call a time out. With 4:12 left Bartlett went 2-2 from the free throw line and Old Town led 12-7. Ellsworth’s Steven Mahon hit a 3 pointer with 2:16 left and Old Town’s lead 1as 14-12. But Old Town’s Cam Archer answered with his own 3 pointer with 1:53 left and Old Town’s lead was 17-12. With 1:22 left Ellsworth’s Jake Maquire sank a basket and the score was Old Town 17 Ellsworth 16, which is how the 1st Quarter ended. Zach Bartlett had 7points for Old Town while Steven Mahon had 5 for Ellsworth.
With 5:19 left in the 2nd Quarter Mahon went 1-2 from the free throw line and Old Town led 21-17. Libby hit a 2 pointer for Old Town with 4:34 left and Old Town led 23-19. With 3:25 left Ellsworth’s Jake Maguire tied the game 23-23 and gave Ellsworth the lead with 1:15 left 27-25. That was Ellsworth’s first lead of the night. The 1st Half ended with the score tied 27-27.
After some offensive fireworks in the 1st half, things quieted down in the 3rd Quarter. Ellsworth’s Josh Bean hit a 3 pointer with 7:20 left, and Brandon Braley drained another 3 pointer, and Ellsworth had a 33-27 lead. When Josh Bean went 1-2 from the free throw line with 2:25 left, Ellsworth led 34-29. But with 1:55 left Garrett Libby hit a 3 pointer, his second of the game, and Ellsworth’s lead was 2, 34-32. At the buzzer, Ellsworth’s Jeff Weeks collected the rebound and made his shot, and Ellsworth ended the 3rd Quarter 36-32.
The 4th Quarter was the Garrett Libby Show! He scored 14 of his game high 24 points in the 4th Quarter. He gave Old Town the lead with 7:20 left hitting a 3 pointer, his 3rd of the game and it was 37-26 Coyotes. Old Town’s Garvey Melmed hit a 3 with 6:32 left and Old Town led 42-38. With 3:32 Mahon brought Ellsworth closer draining a 2 pointer, and the score was 46-42. Josh Bean swished a 3 pointer for Ellsworth with 2:11 left and the score was 48-45, Old Town. That was the closest Ellsworth would get and the final score was Old Town 53 Ellsworth 47.
Ellsworth falls to 3-5 on the season, while Old Town improves to 6-2. Ellsworth’s next game is Wednesday January 7th when they host Washington Academy in a game that will be heard on AM 1370 WDEA and WDEA Internet Radio. Old Town’s next game is Saturday, January 5th when they travel to Aroostook County to play the Caribou Vikings.
