Free throws! They're only worth 1 point but oh what a difference they make in high school basketball!

That was the case on Wednesday, January 24 when the Ellsworth Lady Eagles lost to the Washington Academy Raiders by the score of 40-37 at Katsiaficas Gymnasium in Ellsworth. The Ellsworth Eagles were 4-15 from the free throw line for the game, and 1-10 in the second half, when the game was on the line.

Washington Academy was on the scoreboard first, when Mackenzie Foss scored for the Raiders, and WA led 2-0 with 7:15 left.

Ellsworth then went on a 11-0 run, as Emily Berry scored 2 baskets, Taylor White scored 2 baskets and hit a free throw as she was fouled, and Annika Firestone went 2-2 from the free throw line, and Ellsworth led 11-2 with 4:03 left in the 1st Quarter.

Washington Academy then went on their own 11-0 run, as Lauren Raye hit a 3 pointer, Tamara Kabuye went 2-2 from the free throw line and made a basket and Mackenzie Foss hit 2 baskets, including one at the buzzer, and at the end of the 1st Quarter Washington Academy led Ellsworth 13-11.

In the 2nd Quarter Foss scored again for WA and with 7:13 left, The Raiders led 15-11. Whitney Porter scored for Washington Academy and they were up 17-11 with 7:05 left. Morgan Card, coming off the bench for Ellsworth because of illness, scored for the Eagles with 5:39 left and then Taylor White scored consecutive baskets and with 2:16 left the score was tied 17-17.

Tamara Kabuye went 2-2 from the free throw line with 1:13 left, and that ended the scoring in the 1st Half, with Washington Academy up op 19-17.

The teams traded baskets to open the 3rd Quarter with Porter scoring for WA, followed by White for Ellsworth and it was 21-19 WA with 5:57 remaining. Logan Huckins went 1-2 from the free throw line and then Taylor Cushing scored a basket followed by Lauren Raye's 3-pointer and Washington Academy had a 8 point lead, 27-19 with 4:17 left in the 3rd Quarter.

Maddie Card's 3-pointer with 3:37 left and the lead was cut to 5 points. But Washington Academy's Cushing's basket followed by Kabuye's basket increased the lead to 9 points with 2:34 remaining as Washington Academy led 31-22.

Morgan Card scored for Ellsworth, but missed her free throw as she was fouled and Ellsworth trailed by 7, 31-24. Kabuye went 1-2 from the free throw line for WA and then Morgan Card drained two baskets and the 3rd Quarter ended with Washington Academy leading Ellsworth 32-28.

Mackenzie Foss started the scoring for WA in the 4th Quaret and the Raiders were up top 34-28 wiht 7:31 left. Berry's 2, followed by Langley's 2  and Berry's 2, tied the score 34-24 with 6:12 left.

Cushing went 1-2 from the free throw line and with 5:51 left, WA led 35-34. Langley's 2 gave Ellsworth their last lead of the night, 36-35 with 5:08 left. Cushing's 2 pointer put WA back in the lead 37-36 with 4:54 left. Kabuye then went 1-2 from the free throw line for WA and the lead was 38-36.

Maddie Card with 1-2 from the free throw line and with 2:37 left WA led 38-37. Mackenzie Foss then went 1-2 from the free throw line twice, and that completed the scoring as Washington Academy came out on top 40-37.

Washtington Academy was led by Mackenzie Foss and Tamara Kabuye who each scored 10 points and Taylor Cushing had 9 points for the Raiders. Ellsworth was led by Taylor White with 11 points followed by Emily Berry and Morgan Card who both scored 8 points.

With the loss, Ellsworth falls to 7-5 and plays Caribou at home Friday January 25th followed by Presque Isle at home on Saturday January 26th. The Ellsworth-Presque Isle game will be on WDEA AM 1370 and WDEA Internet Radio with the tip-off at 1 PM. Washington Academy improves to 6-6 and hosts John Bapst Friday, January 25th next.
