Ellsworth pitcher Matt Burnett has been named the McDonald's High School Athlete of the Week after his strong performance in the Class B North semifinals.

He won with 37 percent of the vote, squeaking past Bangor’s Zach Ireland, who received 35 percent of the vote.

Nominees were selected based on their performances in the semifinals. Brewer athletes Josiah Cyr (baseball) and Libby Hewes (softball) also received nominations.

Burnett, the PVC Pitcher and Player of the Year, was dominant in the Eagles’ win over Oceanside in the semifinals.

He allowed four hits and no walks while striking out nine in five scoreless innings.

At the plate, Burnett helped his own cause by adding a double in Ellsworth's 12-0 triumph.

Other local athletes who have received McDonald's High School Athlete of the Week honors this spring include Ben Cotton of John Bapst, Zachary Beaton of Hermon, Brody Guiggey of Katahdin High School, Lauren Hanna of Sumner Memorial High School, Mattanawcook Academy's Haley McLaughlin and McKenna Smith of Old Town.
