In one of the closest votes we've ever seen here at Sports Radio 92.9 The Ticket, we have a new McDonald's High School Athlete of the Week.

Orono cross-country standout Tia Tardy came off an amazing week and earned athlete of the week honors, capping off an impressive season by winning the class C state championship on Saturday with a time of 19:43:81. Tardy improved her time in the 5K by 1:28 over last season. This year she broke 5 course records and had the fastest overall 3-mile and 5K times in the state.

She narrowly defeated Lukas Firestone of the Ellsworth Eagles, who helped the Eagles advance to the North Region Championship game with a goal and 2 assists in their win over Waterville. The Eagles eventually fell to Erskine Academy in that regional championship.

Our third nominee, Dane Johsnon of the Bangor Rams also had an impressive week, helping the Rams beat #4 Edward Little in the quarterfinals by rushing for 223 yards on 20 carries and 3 touchdowns. On defense he returned a fumble for another score. Dane finished the regular season as the top rusher in the conference with 1,092 yards and 10 touchdowns. The Rams will take on the undefeated Portland Bulldogs in the regional semifinals on Friday.
