The Red Sox arch rival New York Yankees win the bidding war for Japan's Masahiro Tanaka - seven years and $155 milliion bucks. The 25-year-old righthander pitcher went 24-0 and a 1.27 ERA in Japan last season.

The Yankees will also pay his old team in Japan, the Golden Eagles, a $20-million-dollar posting fee.

The total money is the most ever spent on a free agent pitcher in MLB.

The Dodgers, Cubs, Diamondbacks and White Sox were in the bidding.

The Red Sox talked with Tanaka and his representatives but it was apparent early on in the process that the Sox would not go that high in the bidding process.
