Former UMaine hockey defenseman Dave Nonis takes over as GM of the Toronto Maple Leafs just days before NHL training camps get started after the lockout.

The Leafs fired GM Brian Burke Wednesday afternoon after four plus years on the job.

Nonis is captained the Maine Black Bear hockey team to back-to-back NCAA playoff appearances. He started his hockey management career in 1990 with Vancouver and became Canucks GM in 2004. He's been in the Toronto front office since 2008.

Brian Burke is perhaps most famous in Toronto for the trade with the Boston Bruins when he aquired Phil Kessel from the B's. The Bruins ended up with #1 draft picks that turned out to be Tyler Seguin and Dougie Hamilton.
