Former UMaine Black Bears captain Jim Montgomery got his college coaching career off to a great start - his Denver Pioneers swept Merrimack in a two game series over the weekend. Denver jumped from #17 up to #12 in the USCHO national poll.

Montgomery took over the Pioneer program when long time coach George Gwazdecky was let go. Some in the college hockey community thought he might be the next UMaine coach when Tim Whitehead was released from his job.

He is Maine's alltime leading scorer with 301 points and captained the Maine 42-1-2 national title team. Current Maine coach Red Gendron was an assistant coach on that team.

Maine and Denver do not play this year...but down the road what a series this would be?
