Former UMaine goalie Jimmy Howard pitched a shutout in the Detroit Red Wings season opening 4-0 win over Toronto last night. Howard stoped all 22 shots from the Maple Leafs.

Howard and Wings young goalie Petr Mrazek have been in a battle to claim the #1 goalie spot. New Detroit coach Jeff Blashill says both will play in the early season.

Howard is now in his 7th season with Detroit. He is one of three former Black Bear goalies playing in the NHL. (Ben Bishop,Tampa Bay and Scott Darling,Chicago)
