A Hancock County man was indicted this week by a grand jury on dozens of charges, mostly dealing with illegal hunting practices.

Ralph Fowler, age 44 of Franklin, is facing multiple charges including: seven counts of night hunting, 12 counts each closed season violation and exceeding bag limit on deer, six counts of having a loaded firearm in a vehicle, two counts of hunting antlerless deer without a permit, and three counts of operating after suspension.

In addition, Fowler is charged with one count each of: hunting on Sunday, hunting or possessing moose without a permit, unlawful discharge of a crossbow, possessing deer taken at night, discharging a firearm from a paved road, aggravated cruelty to animals, discharging a crossbow from a public way, illegally baiting deer, waste of game, criminal trespass, and unlawful trafficking in scheduled drugs.

The Maine Warden Service conducted the investigation that led to the charges over a three-month period in 2014 in the towns of Eastbrook, Lamoine, Hancock, and Bar Harbor. Lieutenant Dan Scott of the Warden Service told the Ellsworth American that Fowler's complete disregard for hunting laws "clearly had an impact on the local deer population."
