Portland's John Hayes fired a 1-under par 69 at the USGA Mid-Amateur Championship in Atlanta today and made it into the top 64 match play portion of the national tournament.

Hayes shot a 77 in round one Saturday and after the Sunday play got rained out, he followed it up with the 69 score. The 146 total (+5) puts him tied for 49th place among 264 competitors. He is the lone Mainer in the field.

The Mid-Amateur tourney is for players 25-years-old and up.

Hayes begins his match play competition tomorrow.

Hayes won the Downeast Metro Tournament in Bangor back in June. He finished sixth at the Maine Amateur Championship in July.
