After two scoreless periods, UMaine and Vermont each scored two third period goals and had to settle for a 2-2 overtime tie Friday night at Alfond Arena.

Black Bear goalie Jeremy Swayman and Catamounts goalie Stefanos Lekkas were locked in a goalie duel for two periods. Maine had the shot advantae 28-14.

Five and a half minutes into the third period, the Bears finally lit the lamp with a Peter Housakos goal. Four minutes later, a 2-0 Maine lead on a Canon Pieper goal.

But UVM came back on the Bears, getting two Ross Colton powerplay goals late in the third. The game tying score came when UVM pulled their goalie and scored on the 6-4 advantage with 1:43 left in the game.

Neither team could score in the overtime.

Swayman finished with 24 saves. Lekkas had 43.

The Black Bears record is 3-4-1 in Hockey East (5-7-1 overall). The Catamounts are 1-5-2 and 4-9-2.

Game two of the weekend series at Alfond is today at 5pm.
