The #12 ranked Northeastern Huskies scored three goals in a six minute stretch in the first period and then had to fight off a late UMaine charge to beat the Black Bears 3-2 Friday night at Alfond Arena.

Maine got back into the game early in the second period and an end-to-end rush and goal by Ryan Smith to make it 3-1.

The Bears got their second goal in the final four minutes of the game, an Adam Dawe score.

But Maine could never get the equalizer.

Jeremy Swayman made 39 saves in the Maine net. Cayden Primeau, just off his stint playing for Team USA at the World Juniors Championship, stopped 19 Maine shots.

The Black Bears drop to 3-4-2 in Hockey East and 7-10-2 overall.

The Huskies are 7-2-1 and 13-4-1.

Game two of the weekend series tonight at 7pm.
