Alfred University overcame a slow start to beat the Husson Eagles in both teams respective season openers 39-25 at the Winkin Complex.

After two fumbles and a safety led to Husson grabbing an early 12-0 lead, Alfred responded by scoring the game's next three touchdowns to go on top, 21-12.

The Eagles were staked to an early lead thanks to a strong showing from their defense and kicking game, before their passing attack got them back into the contest. Quarterback, Joe Seccareccia, connected with Deon Wiggins for a 35-yard score just before the half and the Eagles entered the break trailing, 21-18.

Husson briefly took the lead in the third quarter on a second Seccareccia-to-Wiggins touchdown, before Alfred pulled away.

The Saxon's defense recovered a pair of fumbles in the red zone, setting up the team's offense for two easy scores. Quarterback, Tyler Johnson, rushed for a 2-yard TD late in the fourth quarter to seal the win.

Seccareccia finished the game 20-38 for 258 yards, 3 touchdowns and 2 interceptions. Deon Wiggins led the Eagles with 4 catches for 134 yards and 2 touchdowns.

Ellis Throckmorton led the Husson defense in the loss with 13 tackles while safety Kenny Sweet added 10.

The Eagles head to New York next Saturday for a game against Alfred State.
