Notre Dame scored two goals in the first 6:22 of the game in Portland Friday night and beat UMaine 3-2 in Hockey East action. 

Game two of the series is tonight at Afond Arena in Orono.

Jack Jenkins and Anders Bjork scored those early goals for the Irish.

A minute and a half into the second period Notre Dame scored again to make it 3-0.

Maine's Brendan Robbins finally beat Irish goalie Carl Petersen with just under 13 minutes to play in the game. Nolan Vesey added another Black Bear goal with four seconds to play to make the final 3-2.

For Notre Dame goalie Cal Petersen, it was his 79th consecutive start.

Maine goalie Rob McGovern played the first two periods with18 saves. Matt Morris played the third period and made seven saves.

The Black Bears drop to 4-12-1 in Hockey East, 10-16-3 overall.

Notre Dame is 9-5-3 and 16-9-4.

tonight's game at Alfond Arena marks the final time Maine plays Notre Dame in Hockey East. The Irish are leaving the conference after this season.
