Former Maine Black Bear Joey Diamond almost made the roster of the NHL New York Islanders - almost. Diamond was among the last cuts made by Isles coach Jack Capuano, another former UMaine player.

Diamond signed a pro contract last spring after using up his college eligibilty. He had 14 goals, 10 assists for 24 points in his senior year. Perhaps he is best known for his penalty minutes - 147 of them last season.

Diamond was playing well for the Islanders in pre-season, including collecting an assist on a goal in the team's final exhibition game.

But he will be sent to the AHL team in Bridgeport. His head coach there - Scott Pellerin, another former Black Bear player.
