The University of Maine baseball team opened America East play with a split at UMBC while the softball team earned a split with Hartford.

Baseball

In game one of the double header, pitcher Tommy Lawrence pitched the complete game as the Bears got a 4-1 win. Lawrence struck out 8 and allowed just 8 hits while 85 of his 125 pitches were strikes. Catcher Jonathan Salcedo had two hits and drove in a run on a sacrafice fly, Troy Black doubled in a run.

In Game two the Bears took a tough 2-1 loss with Colin Gay driving in the lone run in the top of the 7th inning. Shaun Coughlin took the loss allowing both runs on 5 hits and 2 walks over 4.1 innings.

The Bears and Retrievers play the final game of the series today and will try to improve on their 8-15 record.

Softball

After dropping the opening game of their double header with Hartford by a 2-0 score, a game in which the Bears managed only three hits, they got the offense cranked up in game two posting a 10-0 win in 5-innings.

Outfielder Jessica Burk had 4 hits, 2 rbi, and scored 2 runs. Emj Fogel added an rbi double and an rbi triple as part of the Bears 14 hit attack.

Hannah Hill picked up her 4th win of the season after allowing just 2 hits and striking out 7. Maine is now 9-9 overall heading into the series finale today.
