It was a Downeast sweep in Class D North Saturday morning, with the Machias Bulldogs earning a spot in the state finals after pulling away from Southern Aroostook in the second half.

The No. 2 Bulldogs (20-1) led by just two points at the half, but opened up a 20-point lead in the second half on their way to a 43-31 win

Senior captain James Mersereau led the Bulldogs with 20 points.

The Bulldogs last won the regional championship in 1995. They went on to win the state championship that year as well.

The top-seed Warriors (19-2) couldn't get their offense on track with senior Jackson Mathers scoring only six points. Nolan Altvater led the team with 18 points.

Earlier Saturday morning, the Shead Tigers girls of Eastport defeated Southern Aroostook for their second regional crown in two years.

Machias will play south champs Greenville at 2:25 p.m. on Sat., March 5 at the Cross Insurance Center in Bangor.
