Joe Maddon had a clause in his contract to opt-out and that's exactly what he's done. After nine years as Tampa Bay manager, Maddon is done. Effective immediately.

Rays owner Stuart Sternberg says they tried to get Maddon signed to an extention but it didn't happen.

The Maddon move comes just a a couple of weeks after executive VP Andrew Friedman left Tampa Bay to take over LA Dodger baseball operations.

His record with the Rays was 754-705.

Maddon is, in essence, a free agent.
