The Orono Red Riots came out of the seventh seed to oust the No. 2 George Stevens Academy and earn a spot in the Class C semifinals against the defending state champion Houlton Shiretowners.

The Red Riots got off to a fast start and after holding back a second quarter run form the Eagles, distanced themselves in the second half on their way to a 68-57 win.

GSA cut the lead to 6 points with 2 minutes to go, but was forced to foul with time running out. Orono went 19 of 24 from the line in the game, including 9 of 10 from sophomore Nate Desisto in the fourth quarter to seal the win.

For Orono, Desisto finished with 15 points. Jackson Coutts scored 15, Damian Heeger had 11 and Cameron Hines had 10.

For GSA, Kelsey Allen led all scorers with 21 points. Freshman Taylor Schildroth and Nick Szwez each scored 10 points.

Orono will now face Houlton in the semifinals at 7:05 p.m. on Friday.

The Houlton Shiretowners took another step in defense of their state crown Wednesday morning, handling Washington Academy in the first game of the day at the Cross Insurance Center in Bangor.

Kyle Bouchard scored 25 points on the way to a 50-36 win over the Raiders.

It was a one-point game at halftime, but the Shiretowners had a big second half, holding the Washington Academy big men -- Gage Feeney and Austin Seavey -- in check and outscoring the Raiders 18-5 in the third quarter.

Houlton, the defending state champions, will advance to the semifinals in a wide-open Class C bracket.

“There a lot of tough teams,” Bouchard said after the game. “There are no easy games.”

In addition to Bouchard’s 25, senior center Christian Crane had 10 and Daniel Howe added 8 for Houlton.

For WA, Feeney and Seavey combined for 20 points, and junior guard Cameron Varney had 12 points.
