19-year-old Jon Gillies is at the USA World Junior Team training camp in Minnesota, competing to be the goalie for the upcoming world tournament in Sweden. Gillies is from South Portland and the starting goalie for the Providence Friars.

Gillies and two other young goalies are among the 29 players competing for spots on the USA team. One of those goalies is Boston College freshman Thatcher Demko.

Minnesota Golden Gophers coach Don Lucia is the Team USA coach. The practices continue this week with cuts coming later in the week and then on to Sweden this weekend for exhibition games.

The World Junior Tournament begins December 26th.

By the way, UMaine doesn't play Gillies and the Providence team until the final two games of the regular season, February 28 and March 1 at Alfond Arena.
