Maine's Steve Clifford is head coach of the NBA Charlotte Hornets and he just lost his associate head coach - and he couldn't be happier about it.

Former Georgetown University star and NY Knicks Hall of Famer Patrick Ewing is going back to college to take over the Hoyas program after being an assistant coach for years in the NBA.

Clifford, the former UMaine Farmington player and Woodland HS coach, has been Ewing's biggest backer to get a head coaching job. Clifford and Ewing coached together in with the Houston Rockets and Orlando Magic. For the past three years, Ewing worked under Clifford with the Hornets.

Ewing is leaving Charlotte immediately to get started at Georgetown. The Hornets are 36-42 and 2.5 games out of a playoff spot with just four games remaining.
