Massive Fire Involves Both Land and Structures [UPDATE]
Crews from several towns have been battling a massive fire today. Officials say the blaze started as a house fire and then spread to outbuildings and surrounding property. No injuries have been reported.
WABI-TV reports crews from several towns, in addition to a Forest Service helicopter were dispatched to the Northern Maine town of Burlington. Fire officials say it's mostly contained at this point.
The fast-moving fire broke out at around one o'clock Wednesday afternoon at a house on Long Ridge Road. It consumed the house and barn, plus two vehicles, before spreading to a neighbor's property. The neighbor's barn was destroyed and house was threatened, but crews were able to save the home. In all, officials say the fire burned 50 acres in Burlington.
The fire danger in Maine is listed as 'very high' at this point. Extreme dry conditions, paired with relative low humidity, and gusty winds are combining to make for very dangerous conditions. Forest Ranger Jeff Currier told us on Tuesday that the department, in addition to local fire departments, are generally not issuing outdoor burn permits until conditions improve.
