MDI Boys Beat Bucksport 54-39

The MDI Boys improved to 5-2 on the 2012-2013 Basketball season with a 54-39 victory over the Bucksport Golden Bucks, Saturday, January 5th in a game played in Bucksport. With the loss, the Bucksport Golden Bucks fall to 4-5 on the season.

It was 4-0 MDI with 6:46 left in the 1st Quarter when Jon Phelps stole the ball and completed the lay-up for MDI. Bucksport's Mitchell Burgess hit a 3 pointer with 5:45 left making the score MDI 4 Bucksport 4.  Ben Walls pulled down an offensive rebound, put the shot back up and in, was fouled and sank the free throw with 4:27 left and MDI led 8-5. With 3:30 left in the 1st Quarter, Chris Chaffee went 2-2 from the free throw line and MDI was up 10-5. Phelps hit 1-2 from the free throw line with 1:27 left and MDI's lead was 15-7. Andrew Davis made a basket with 43 seconds left for the Trojans, and MDI led at the end of the 1st Quarter 17-10.

In the 2nd Quarter Bucksport's Josh Gray sank a field goal making the score 17-12 and when Adam Gray hit a 2 pointer for MDI with 4:05 left in the 2nd, MDI was up 21-12. With 3:15 left Jimmy Osgood knocked down a basket to pull Bucksport within 5 and the score was MDI 21-16. That was the closest Bucksport would come to taking the lead for the rest of the game. Mitchell Burgess closed out the scoring in the 1st Half going 1-2 from the free throw line with 37.2 seconds left and the Trojans had a 25-17 half time lead.

In the 3rd Quarter Adam Gray took a rebound and put it back in for MDI with 7:27 left and the Trojans led 27-17. With 5:20 left Abe Philbrook hit a basket for MDI and the lead was 31-19. With 5:00 left in the 3rd Quarter Ben Walls basket went in, and he was fouled. When he sank the free throw, MDI was up 34-19. Walls hit another 2 pointer with 3:10 left and MDI was up 36-19. Bucksport's Sam Stearns drained a long 3 point shot with 1:13 left and MDI led 38-26. MDI's Walls hit drove to the hoop and was fouled with 1:09 left. His shot went in and he subsequently made the free throw for a 3 point play and the Trojans were up 41-26, and that's how the 3rd Quarter ended.

In the 4th Quarter Bucksport's Burgess went 2-2 from the free throw line with 5:53 left and MDI led 41-28. With 5:00 left, Woofie Kaiser grabbed an offensive rebound off a Ben Walls missed free throw and put the ball in the basket and MDI led 45-29. With 2:05 left Bucksport's Josh Gray went 2-2 from the free throw line and the lead was 47-38 MDI. Ben Walls went 1-2 from the free throw line with 1:21 left in the game and the score was 50-39 and Jon Phelps scored the final points of the game with 16.7 seconds left going 2-2 from the free throw line, making the final MDI 54 Bucksport 39.

The MDI Boy's Freshmen team defeated Bucksport 46-27 to improve to 8-1 and the MDI Boy's JV Team defeated Bucksport 58-36.

MDI's next game is tomorrow, Monday, January 7th when they travel to Dover-Foxcroft to play the Foxcroft Academy Ponies. That game will be on AM 1370 WDEA and WDEA Internet Radio with the pre-game starting at 6:40 and tip-off at 7 PM. Bucksport's next game is Wednesday January 9th when they travel to Blue Hill to play George Steven's Academy.
