MDI Boys Beat Old Town 60-55

The MDI Boys and Old Town Boys entered the Wednesday, January 8th game tied for 4th place, and this game was expected to be a closely fought game in Old Town, and the game didn’t disappoint. MDI defeated Old Town 60-55. MDI knew that Old Town was a very good 3-point shooting team, and Old Town proved that, hitting 9 3′s in the game, some from what seemed Orono as they were bombing the basket. At one point, in the 3rd quarter, Old Town had hit 8 3′s, and 24 of their 35 points came from behind the 3 point arc!

MDI went out to a 12-9 lead at the end of the 1st Quarter. Aaron Snurkowski banked hit a runner at the buzzer to give the Trojans the 3 point lead. Old Town double teamed Jon Phelps and held him scoreless in the 1st Quarter. The Trojans got 4 points each from Steven Hanscom and Andrew Davis. Kaleb Gifford hit a 3-pointer for the Coyotes.

In the 2nd Quarter, the teams traded 3′s. Jon Phelps scored back to back 3 pointers for MDI and scored 9 points in the quarter. Steven Hanscom drained a 3-pointer for MDI. Old Town scored 4 3-pointers in the quarter, 2 by Tylor Gifford, and 1 a piece from Mitchell Cole and Scott Smart. At the end of the 1st half the Trojans led Old Town 28-22.

The 3rd Quarter looked to be a 3-fest for both teams. MDI ‘s Phelps drained two more, and Riley Swanson swished a 3-pointer. Meanwhile, while MDI was draining 3′s, Andrew Davis scored 4 baskets inside and along the baseline with some sweet jumpers, giving Davis 14 points through three quarters. For Old Town, Kaleb Gifford, Tyler Gifford and Eric Hoogterp all scored a 3-pointer. At the end of the 3rd Quarter MDI led 45-35.

Old Town would cut MDI’s lead to 5 points in the  4th quarter, but couldn’t get closer. Hoogerp scored a 3-pointer and Adam Robinson scored 6 in the quarter. Steven Hanscom scored 6 in the quarter, going 4-5 from the free throw line for MDI. Davis had 5 points and Phelps had 5 points for the Trojans. who were outscored 20-15 in the final quarter, but still had enough to come away with the 5 point victory, 60-55.

MDI was led by John Phelps with 20 points, including 4 3′s. Andrew Davis had a career high 19 points for the Trojans. MDI went 12-16 from the free throw line. Old Town was led by Tyler Gifford with 9 points, all coming from 3′s. Eric Hoogterp and Adam Richardson each had 8 points for Old Town. Old Town was 6-8 from the free throw line.

With the victory, MDI improved to 7-2, while Old Town fell to 6-4. MDI next plays Washington Academy at Bernard Parady Gymnasium in Bar Harbor on Saturday, January 11th at 7 PM. Old Town travels to Lincoln to play Mattanawcook Academy on Friday, January 10th.
