Old Town Falls to MDI in Overtime

The MDI Boys beat OId Town in overtime in Old Town by the score of 55-54. With the victory, MDI improved to 8-2 on the season and Old Town fell to 8-4.

Old Town came out firing in the 1st Quarter, hitting 6 3-pointers, led by Garrett Libby who hit 3 3′s. MDI trailed at the end of the 1st Quarter 24-18. MDI was led by Adam Gray with 6 points in the 1st Quarter. MDI was 5-6 from the free throw line while Old Town never attempted a free throw in the 1st Quarter.

In the 2nd Quarter, Old Town continued their offensive explosion, scoring 15 points. At the end of the 1st half, Libby had 15 points for the Coyotes, and 8 Coyotes were in the score book. Old Town was 3-4 from the free throw line. MDI only scored 6 points in the 2nd half, as Jon Phelps hit his 2nd 3-pointer. At the half, MDI was 6-7 from the free throw line, and MDI had 6 points each from Jon Phelps, Colin Mooers, and Adam Gray. MDI’s Ben Walls was scoreless. At the half, Old Town was up by 15, 39-24.

At the half, MDI made a key defensive change, as Abe Philbrook was tasked with keeping Garrett Libby in check. MDI held Old Town scoreless for the entire 3rd Quarter, and scored 13 points. Phelps had a 3 pointer and 2 field goals in the 3rd Quarter, Adam Gray had 4 in the 3rd and Abe Philbrook had 2 points in the quarter as well. After 3 Quarters Old Town was up by 2, 39-37.

MDI tied it was 5:34 left in the 4th Quarter when Andrew Davis scored his 2 points of the game, and it was tied 39-39. Old Town finally scored for the first time in the entire 2nd half, when Old Town’s Libby went 2-2 from the free throw line. MDI had held Old Town scoreless for 10:15 in the second half! With 25.7 seconds Old Town’s Libby missed both free throws, and the score was 47-47 at the end of regulation.

In the overtime, Old Town took an early lead, but Ben Walls scored 7 points in the overtime period to lead MDI to the 55-54 win. Old Town’s Cam Archer scored a basket at the buzzer to draw Old Town within one point.

Old Town ended up shooting 14-17 from the free throw line, while MDI was 12-15. Old Town made only 3 field goals in the second half and overtime, scoring 15 points. MDI scored 31 points in the second half.

Old Town was led by Garrett Libby with 20 points including 3 3-pointers, while MDI was led by Jon Phelps with 17 points including 2-3 pointers.

MDI’s next game is against Ellsworth, in the battle for Hancock County supremacy, Saturday January 19th. Old Town’s has two games remaining this week, Thursday January 17th when they host Foxcroft Academy and Saturday, January 19th when they travel up to Presque Isle to play the Presque Isle Wildcats.
