MDI Girls Beat John Bapst
The MDI Girls Basketball team was looking to rebound from their first loss of the season on Saturday against Presque Isle, and went up to the Bangor Auditorium to play the John Bapst Crusaders in the final game of 2012, on Monday, December 31st. This was MDI’s third game in 4 days, and they couldn’t practice on Sunday, and most of the girls were involved in snow removal at their homes as the Bar Harbor area picked up 12-15 inches of snow Saturday night – Sunday morning.
MDI scored first, with 6:03 left to go in the 1st Quarter when Hannah Shaw stole the ball and completed a lay-up and the score was MDI 2-0. With 5:15 left, Sarah Phelps drained a 3 pointer, and MDI led 5-2. With 2:59 left, Abby Jewett sank a two point bakset and the lead was 9-3 MDI. MDI’s Kelsey Shaw went 1-2 from the free throw line with 1:10 left and MDI led John Bapst 11-5. The 1st Quarter ended with the Trojans up top 14-5.
In the 2nd Quarter there wasn’t much scoring. With 5:08 left , Abby Jewett hit 2 points from in the paint, and the lead was 18-5. With 3:38 left MDI’s Emily Lewis sank a 3 pointer and the Trojans led 21-7. The 1st Half ended with MDI up top 25-13. MDI was 3-4 from the free throw line in the 1st Half, while John Bapst was 7-13.
In the 3rd Quarter, with 5:42 left, MDI’s Sierra Tapley hit 1-2 free throws and MDI led 26-13. John Bapst got on the scoreboard with 3:31 left in the 3rd Quarter when Meagan True hit a 2 pointer and the score was MDI 26 John Bapst 15. MDI’s Sara Norberg drained a 3 pointer with 1:55 left and MDI led 29-15. The 3rd Quarter ended with the Trojans lead by 14, with the score 31-17.
In the 4th Quarter, MDI committed their 7th foul with 7:24 left, and John Bapst’s Jordan Turner went 2-2 from the free throw line and MDI led 32-19. With 6:45 left, Sara Norberg hit her 2nd 3 pointer of the game, and the Trojans led 35-19. With 4:40 left Emily Lewis went 2-2 from the free throw line and MDI led 38-23. With 2:30 left MDI’s Emily Lewis threw a baseball pass to Kelsey Shaw who made the easy lay-up and MDI led 42-27. The game ended with MDI winning 44-31. John Bapst went 13-23 from the free throw line, while MDI was 12-18.
With the win, MDI improved to 6-1 on the season, while John Bapst fell to 1-5. The MDI girls next game is Friday January 4th when they host Bucksport in a game that will be broadcast on AM 1370 WDEA and WDEA Internet Radio. John Bapst’s next game is Thursday, January 3rd when they host Orono.
