MDI Girls Beat Old Town 62-49
The MDI Girls Basketball team entered the game against Old Town on Monday, January 14th with an impressive 8-1 record on the season, but it was good enough for only 9th place in the Heal Points. They knew they had a “point worthy” game against Old Town who was 6-5 but 7th in the Heal Points, and after a sluggish start, MDI came out firing on all cylinders in the 3rd Quarter to beat Old Town and jump up to 6th place in the Heal Point Standings!
MDI jumped out to a 2-0 lead when Hannah Shaw made a shot with 7:47 left in the 1st. Old Town’s Kelsey Hesseltine tied it 2-2 with 6:40 left but MDI’s Sierra Myrick hit the 1st of her two 3-pointers in the 1st Quarter with 6:28 left and MDI led 5-2.. Old Town’s Kelsey Maxim then scored with 5 minutes left and MDI led 5-4. With 4:34 Myrick hit her 2nd 3-pointer and MDI was up 8-4. With 3:54 left Brook Cole sank a basket and the lead was 8-6 MDI. Hannah Shaw answered for MDI with 3:12 left and MDI’s lead was 10-6. Then Old Town went on a little run, scoring 9 points as Heseltine hit a 3, Cole hit 2 2-pointers and Mikayla Richards sank a basket and with 10 seconds left, Old Town led 17-10. MDI clawed back to within 5 points at the buzzer as Sara Norberg’s basket went in and Old Town led after the 1st Quarter 17-12.
In the 2nd Quarter, MDI was on the board first, as Molly Carroll sank a shot with 6:58 gone and it was 17-14 Old Town. Maxim answered for the Coyotes and it was Old Town 19-14 with 6:32 remaining. Norberg scored for the Trojans with 3:42 left followed by a Shaw basket with 2:35 left, and Old Town led 19-18. Mikayla Richards went 1-2 from the free throw line for Old Town with 2:10 left, and Kate Rawson scored for the Coyotes with 1:49 left and Old Town’s lead was 22-18. But MDI’s Sarah Phelps drained a 3 with 1:23 left and Abby Jewett put MDI in the lead for the night with a basket with 5 seconds left, and the Trojans were on top of Old Town 23-22 at the end of the 1st Half.
The 3rd Quarter saw MDI come out flying, going on a 11-0 run, to take the lead 34-22 on the strength of Sara Phelps 2 2-pointers, and 1 3 Pointer, Sierra Myrick’s 2 pointer and Hannah Shaw’s basket and with 5:37 left MDI was up by 12. With 4:29 Kelsey Maxim went 2-2 from the free throw line to get Old Town on the board, and it was 34-24. But Emily Lewis sank a basket and the free throw and with 4:05 MDI’s lead was 37-24. Old Town and MDI then traded baskets and Cole hit another with 2:53 left for Old Town and MDI’s lead was 39-28. MDI then went on another run. Lewis for 2, Shaw for 2 and another 2. Kelsey Shaw went 3-4 from the free throw line and with 1:29 left, MDI had a 20 point lead 48-28. Brittany Cousins went 1-2 from the free throw line, followed by Lauren Martin going 2-2 and Kayla Madden went 1-2 from the charity stripe, and at the end of the 3rd Quarter MDI was up 48-34. MDI outscored Old Town in the 3rd Quarter 25-12.
In the 4th Quarter Sarah Phelps scored first for MDI hitting a basket and the lead was 50-34 with 7:15 left. Maxim drained a 3 for Old Town and it was 50-37 with 6:26 remaining. Abby Jewett scored for MDI, followed by a Richards 3 with 5:48 left and MDI was up 52-40. Jewett then scored for MDI and went 1-3 from the free throw line and with 5:06 left MDI’s lead was 15. Cole went 1-2 from the free throw line for Old Town followed by a Emily Lewis basket with 3 minutes remaining and the Trojans were up 57-41. Rachel Martin went 1-2 from the free throw line, followed by Hannah Shaw’s basket and one, and it was 60-42. Cole’s basket with 3:09 left made the score 60-44. Lauren Martin’s basket made it 60-46 and Karah Hussey went 1-2 from the free throw line to make it 60-47 with 1:44 left. Sierra Tapley scored for MDI to make it 62-47 and the scoring was rounded out when Hussey and Kate Rawson each went 1-2 from the free throw line for the final MDI 62 Old Town 49.
MDI’s next game is Friday, January 18th when they play the Ellsworth Eagles in Ellsworth in a game with big Heal Points at stake for both sides. Old Town with the loss falls to 6-6 and play at Foxcroft Academy on Wednesday January 16th and in Presque Isle on Saturday January 19th.
