MDI Girls Nearly Upset Presque Isle
To say that the Presque Isle Girls Basketball team was steamrolling over their competition so far this season would be an understatement. Presque Isle had outscored it’s competition 518 to 214 through it’s first seven games, going 7-0. That means they were averaging 74 points per game, while allowing 30.57 points per game, an average differential of 43.42 points per game.
That changed Saturday, December 29th, when the MDI Trojans played their second game of their County Trip, taking on Presque Isle at 10 AM in Presque Isle.
Presque Isle got out to an early lead, and with 4:13 left in the 1st Quarter Presque Isle led 7-4. MDI’s Sarah Phelps hit a 3 with 3:02 left, and the score was tied 9-9. MDI’s Kelsey Shaw scored with 2:59 left and MDI had a 11-9 lead. Presque Isle’s Liza Buck went 1-2 from the free throw line with 2:18 left, and MDI’s lead was 11-10. With 50.5 seconds left in the 1st Quarter, Buck was again at the free throw line, this time going 2-2 and the score was tied at 11. At the buzzer, Presque Isle’s Taylor Williams drained a 3, and Presque Isle had a 14-13 lead.
In the 2nd Quarter, MDI’s Hannah Shaw sank an basket, was fouled and hit her free throw shot, and the score was tied again at 16-16. With 1:23 left, MDI’s Sierra Tapley hit
a shot, and MDI led 23-22 and with 50.5 seconds left, Tapley calmly went 2-2 from the free throw line and MDI led 25-22. The half ended with MDI leading by 1, 24-24. At the half, Presque Isle was 6-8 from the free throw line, while MDI was 6-7.
In the 3rd Quarter, Presque Isle took advantage of their trips to the free throw line, as they went a perfect 8-8. With 6:52 left Presque Isle’s Chandler Guerette went 2-2 from the charity strip, and Presque Isle had a 28-27 lead. With 5:39 left, Presque Isle led 32-27, and Coach Brent Barker called a timeout for MDI. With 4:13 left in the 3rd Hannah Shaw was forced to the bench for MDI having picked up her 4th foul, and the lead was 32-31 Presque Isle. MDI’s Kelsey Shaw then went 2-2 from the free throw line with 4:10 left, and MDI led 33-32. Presque Isle’s Krystal Kingsbury drained 2 free throws (8 points in the 3rd Quarter), and Presque Isle led 34-33. Guerette hit a 3 for Presque Isle with 1:50 left, and the Wildcats led 39-33. The 3rd Quarter ended with Presque Isle leading MDI 41-35.
In the 4th Quarter, MDI’s Hannah Shaw fouled out of the game, with 16 points. With 3:01
left, MDI’s Emily Lewis’ shot was good, and she drained the foul shot, and the Presque Isle lead was 47-42. Presque Isle’s Hannah Graham scored on a 3, and the lead was 50-42. MDI’s Lewis hit another shot and free throw, and the lead was 50-45 Presque Isle, and that was the closest MDI came, with the final score Presque Isle 55 MDI 46
Presque Isle ended up 21-26 from the free throw line, while MDI was 8-11.
Coach Barker after the game stated how proud he was of the girl’s effort in a losing cause. They certainly served notice that they will be a contender in Class B, and that their scrimmaging of alumni, and the boy’s freshmen team had prepared them well for their battle against Presque Isle.
These two teams will meet again Friday January 25th at 6 PM at Bernard Paradis Gymnasium in Bar Harbor with that game on WDEA AM 1370 and WDEA Internet Radio. Presque Isle remains unbeaten at 8-0, while MDI suffers their first loss, and their record now stands at 5-1. MDI next plays John Bapst at the Bangor Auditorium Monday, December 31 at 1:30 with that game on WDEA AM 1370 and WDEA Internet Radio. Presque Isle’s next game is Saturday January 5th at Hermon.
