The MDI Trojan's Boy's Basketball team traveled to East Machias to take on the Washington Academy Raiders on Tuesday, January 28th. It was a rematch of the game that MDI won on Monday, January 20th 65-62 after being down 17 points in the 3rd Quarter.

The game got off to a very quick start, with scoring up and down the court in the 1st Quarter. MDI jumped out to a 25-17 lead at the end of the 1st Quarter. MDI was pounding the ball inside, and Andrew Davis took advantage with his light touch, scoring 10 points in the 1st Quarter and Aaron Snurkowski hit 2 3-pointers for the Trojans. Washington Academy received 5 points from Austin Seavey and 4 points each from Kyle Taylor, Gage Feeney and Patrick Massaad.

In the 2nd Quarter, Washington Academy stormed back. Taylor had 13 points for the Raiders, burying 3 3-pointers. Taner Bickford hit a 3-pointer for MDI and Jon Phelps added 4 points. And then there was the scoring error made by the official scorer, as she didn't put up 2 points that Steven Hanscom scored. Assistant Coach Matt Umphrey argued the point at the half, but MDI did not have a scorer at the table, and the basket that Hanscom scored with a little over a 1:17 left never counted. I said at the time, that it would be terrible if those 2 points would come back to haunt MDI.

As a result, the Official score at the half was 36-36, though MDI should have been ahead 38-36.

In the 3rd Quarter, MDI's defense clamped down, holding Washington Academy to 8 points, and they scored 17, and MDI led after the 3rd Quarter 53-44. Phelps had 6 points for MDI, and Riley Swanson had 5 points including a 3-pointer.

In the 4th Quarter, Washington Academy stormed back. Gage Feeney had 7 points, Fred MacLean had a 3-pointer and Colin Pineo had a 3 -pointer. Then with less than 3 seconds left in the game, Patrick Massaad went 1-2 from the free throw line and Washington Academy had a 62-61 lead. Remember those 2 points? They were haunting MDI, as they should have been up 63-62! MDI inbounded the ball to midcourt to Andrew Davis with 1.6 seconds left and the Trojans called time out! Then when they attempted to inbound the ball, it was knocked out of bounds by Washington Academy. No time had ticked off the clock. MDI then inbounded the ball, and Riley Swanson got off a shot before the buzzer sounded, and even though his shot didn't go in, he was fouled, and Swanson was going to go to the line, with no time left and MDI down by 2 points. Swanson sank both, and MDI won the game 63-62!

MDI was led by Andrew Davis with 20 points, and Jon Phelps had 16 points. MDI was 5-8 from the free throw line. Washington Academy was led by Gage Feeney with 19 points, Kyle Taylor had 17 and Austin Seavey had 15. Washington Academy was 11-14 from the free throw line.

With the victory, MDI improves to 11-4. Their remaining games are at home, Friday, January 31st against George Steven's Academy, Wednesday, February 5th against John Bapst, and then Friday, February 7th against Ellsworth. The games against John Bapst and Ellsworth will be broadcast on WDEA AM 1370. The game against Ellsworth is the Hooping for Hope Game. Washington Academy is now 11-4 and their next game is at Lee Academy on Friday, January 31st.
