The MDI Trojans began the game on a 10-0 run, and apart from a second quarter Wells' surge, cruised to their first state basketball championship in school history, defeating Wells, 59-39, for the Class B crown.

Trailing 13-5 after one quarter of play, Wells got within six points of the Trojans, at 17-11 midway through the second quarter before MDI responded, widening the gap to 27-15 by halftime.

The Trojans then came out firing to begin the second half, opening up a 20-point third quarter lead which they easily maintained throughout the rest of the contest.

Andrew Phelps led the way for the Trojans with 16 points, while Graham Good also added 15 for MDI.

Owen Berry accounted for 14 points in the losing effort for the Warriors.

After wins over Maranacook, Spruce Mountain and Yarmouth, the south regional champs, Wells' squad sees their season come to an end with a record of 16-6.

The Trojans, who entered the Class B tournament as the #2 seed, picked up wins over Belfast, Central and Orono to secure the north regional championship en route to Friday's state game.

MDI caps their historic season with their first ever gold ball and a record of 19-3.
