Former Messalsonkee HS standout Sam Dexter is the new hit king for University of Southern Maine baseball. He set the career record as part of the Huskies 6-1 win over the Husson Eagles Tuesday afternoon in Gorham.

Career hit #274 came in the first inning when Dexter roped a RBI double to center field. He passed Tyler Delorme(2000-2003) to become the USM hit leader.

In Dexter's second at bat Tuesday, he ripped a 2-run homer to make it 275 career hits and counting.

USM has 20 regular season games and more than likely some playoff games for the senior to keep adding to that total.

Dexter finished the day 2-for-3 with 3 RBI and a walk. He's  hitting .432 with 3 HR and 23 RBI in 19 games. He is on the national watch list for the Golden Spikes Award  that goes to the nation's top college player.

Husson managed just five hits against three USM pitchers.

The Eagles fall to 11-10. The #18 Huskies improve to 14-5.
