Twenty-five horses broke loose from their pasture on Route 1 near the Houlton-Littleton town line Tuesday morning.

The owner of the horses, Jessica York, told the Bangor Daily News the animals may have taken off because they were a little hungry and irritable. York said some of the horses are Norwegian Fjord horses, which have quite the appetite. She said she was trying to get the horses to go a few hours without their heads stuck in a bale of hay, and the stampede may have been an act of rebellion.

Crystal Damboise of Presque Isle encountered the horses on the road Tuesday morning. She said she wouldn't be surprised to see something like a moose in the roadway, but a herd of 25 horses was pretty random.
