After three seasons in Hockey East, Notre Dame hockey is bolting and will join the Big Ten. The move will happen for the 2017-18 season.

The Irish departure leaves Hockey East with 11 teams. Six of those teams, including Notre Dame will play in the NCAA Tournament that begins Friday.

The Big Ten has six teams, only one made the NCAA field. Ironically, that team is Michigan and the opponent is Notre Dame.

Hockey officials say the added travel was a factor in Notre Dame's decision. The Irish have to fly have to each HE league game. Money is not the issue, rather the competitive balance of travel within the league.

Reports have the school making the move official as early as later today.
