Former UMaine Black Bear standout Gustav Nyquist finally got the call he had been waiting for from Detroit. The Red Wings will have Nyquist in their lineup tonight when they host Carolina.

Let's face it, he was only played for their Grand Rapids AHL team because of salary cap issues. And let's face it, the Wings are struggling and need his offense.

Nyquist had 7 goals and 14 assists in 15 AHL games.

So when Danny DeKeyser was put on the long-term injury list it made Nyquist and his salary possible to return to the NHL.

Now that he's up with the Red Wings he is likely to stay this time. When he plays in two more NHL games he would need to pass through waivers to be sent to the minors and Detroit officials know that other teams would claim him.

Wings goalie Jimmy Howard is another former UMaine Black Bear player.
