As Little League Baseball crowns its 2013 champion this weekend, here is a reminder of just how hard it is for a Maine team like Westbrook(2005) to get to Williamsport.

In the 66 year history of the Little League World Series only three teams from Maine have made it to the championship tournament in Williamsport, Pennsylvania....

1951 - Suburan LL (Portland suburbs of Cape Elizabeth, Westbrook, Scarborough, Falmouth). The Maine team played one game in the 8-team field, losing to Texas 3-1.

1971 - Augusta East LL   The Maine team played in a tournament field of 8 teams, 4 from the USA and 4 international teams. Augusta lost to Puerto Rice 4-0, beat Kentucky 1-0 and then lost to Spain 5-0.

2005 - Westbrook LL   The Maine team lost to Louisiana 3-2, lost to California 7-3 and then beat Kentucky 3-2.

Another Maine connection to the LLWS is broadcaster Gary Thorne who has called games for ESPN/ABC over the years as you will see in this video...
